Do not Ascribe Purity to Yourselves – [A Short Self-Assessment of Oneself Related to This Ayah]
Allaah (The Most High) stated:
هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ
He knows you well when He created you from the earth (Adam), and when you were fetuses in your mothers’ wombs. So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allah and keep his duty to Him.
Reminder from Imaam Sadi (rahimahullaah):
Weakness is present and witnessed from you since when Allaah created you from the earth and when you were in the wombs of your mothers. It (i.e. weakness) has not ceased being present in you. Even though Allaah (The Most High) place strength in you to perform what you have been commanded, but weakness has not ceased.
[فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ – So ascribe not purity to yourselves]; do not address the people about it by way of (self) praise. [هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ- He knows best him who fears Allah and keep his duty to Him]; for indeed Taqwaa is situated in the heart and Allaah is the One acquainted with it. As for the people, they cannot avail you from Allaah at all. [Ref 1]
