Back To Basics- [The Statement of Pure Islamic Monotheism- Laa ilaaha Ilal laah]
In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy
إِنَّہُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ
Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah “(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah),” they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it).
Allaah [The Most High] said in Surah As-Saaffaat Aayaat 27-39:
[وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ۬ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ – And they (i.e. on the day of Judgement the polytheists) will turn to one another and question one another]; meaning, they will be gathered –in the fire- together with their wives and gods, then they will be stopped and questioned, but they will not respond; then they will turn to one another and start blaming one another due to the misguidance they used to follow and call each other to. Allaah [The Most High] says that the followers will say to the leaders:
[إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ – It was you who used to come to us from the right side]; meaning, you used to approach us with force and overcome us, and thus you misguided us. And had it not been for you, we would have been believers. The leaders will reply: [بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُواْ مُؤۡمِنِينَ – Nay, you yourselves were not believers]; meaning, you did not cease being polytheists, just as we did not cease being polytheists; so based on what are we given superiority over you and based on what can you blame us?
[وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭۖ – And we had no authority over you]; meaning, we did not have authority over you to make you choose disbelief, rather: [بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمً۬ا طَـٰغِينَ – Nay! But you were transgressing people]; [فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآۖ إِنَّا لَذَآٮِٕقُونَ – So now the Word of our Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly (have to) taste (the torment)]; meaning, the decree of our Lord has been established, so we will taste the punishment and we are all associates in this final abode. [فَأَغۡوَيۡنَـٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِينَ- So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray]; meaning, we called you to our misguided path and you followed us, therefore do not blame us rather blame yourselves. Then Allaah [The Most High] says: [فَإِنَّہُمۡ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ۬ فِى ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ – Then verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment]; [إِنَّا كَذَٲلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ – Certainly, that is how We deal with Al-Mujrimun (polytheists, sinners, criminals, the disobedient to Allah, etc.)]
Then Allaah [The Most High] mentions that their crime exceeded the limits in the worldly life and that crime was: [إِنَّہُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ – Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah “(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah),” they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it)]; meaning, when they were called to the belief that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah and that they should abandon the worship of false deities, they turned away with pride and shunned the one who was called them. [وَيَقُولُونَ أَٮِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓاْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ۬ مَّجۡنُونِۭ – And (they) said: “Are we going to abandon our aliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?]; meaning, they opposed the call to laa ilaaha illal laah and said that they and their forefathers have never ceased to be worshippers of their gods. And not only did they turn away from Laa ilaaha illal laah and rejected Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam], rather they also passed the most oppressive judgement against him – declaring him a mad poet, whilst knowing that neither did he know poetry nor the poets; nor is he to be described with the characteristics of the poets, for he was the most judicious and sound minded amongst Allaah’s creation. And due to this [oppressive judgement of theirs], Allaah [The Most High] refuted them, saying: [بَلۡ جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ – Nay! he (Muhammad) has come with the truth (i.e. Allah’s Religion – Islamic Monotheism and this Qur’an) and he confirms the Messengers (before him who brought Allah’s religion – Islamic Monotheism)]; [إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآٮِٕقُواْ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِيمِ- Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment]; [وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ – And you will be requited nothing except for what you used to do (evil deeds, sins, and Allah’s disobedience which you used to do in this world)].
To be continued InshaaAllaah
