[5] Self-Awareness: [When a People Reach The Height of Evil and Deviation Despite The Fact That They Constantly Received Clear Admonition, Severe Warning, Severe Punishment and Humiliation etc]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah (The Most High) said in Surah At-Tawbah Ayah 126:

أَوَلَا يَرَوۡنَ أَنَّهُمۡ يُفۡتَنُونَ فِى ڪُلِّ عَامٍ۬ مَّرَّةً أَوۡ مَرَّتَيۡنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمۡ يَذَّڪَّرُونَ

See they not that they are tried once or twice every year? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it).

[أَوَلَا يَرَوۡنَ – See they not]; meaning: Have the hypocrites not seen; [يُفۡتَنُونَ فِى ڪُلِّ عَامٍ۬ مَّرَّةً أَوۡ مَرَّتَيۡنِ – that they are tried once or twice every year]; meaning: Hudhayfah Ibnul Yamaaan [radiyallaahu-anhu] said, ”They make up one lie or two lies, and thus are misguided by way of it”. Saaleh reports from Ibn Abbaas, who said, ”They enter hypocrisy, then they believe thereafter, but finally enter into hypocrisy again”. Al-Hasan and Qataadah said, ”They are put to trial when it is time for Jihaad” [i.e. when the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) command the Sahaabah to prepare for Jihaad, the hypocrites lagged behind]. Mujaahid said, ”They are put to trial by way of famine and hunger”. Atiyyah said, ”They are put to trial with pain and disease”. Muqaatil said, ”They are shamed due to their hypocrisy being unveiled”. [ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمۡ يَذَّڪَّرُونَ – Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it]; meaning: Neither do they repent from their hypocrisy nor do they receive admonition. [Ref 1]

They neither turn in repentance nor [abandon] the evil they are upon. They neither learn a lesson in order to know what will benefit them, so that they may act upon it; nor do they learn a lesson regarding what is harmful to them, so that they may abandon it.  Allaah [The Most High] put them to the test-and this how Allaah deals with all the nations- through poverty or loss in wealth, loss of health and calamities, and through commands and prohibitions, so that they might turn to Allaah; but they neither repent nor learn a lesson. This Aayah shows that Eemaan increases and decreases, and that it is obligated on a believer to examine his (or her) Imaan- paying close attention to it and improving it [i.e. through the means legislated by Allaah and His Messenger, but not through bidah], so that it increases constantly.
