The Injeel, Torah and others
In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy
Question to Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah):
Is it permissible for a Muslim to obtain the Injeel in order to acquaint himself with the speech of Esaa (alayhis-salaam) the slave and Messenger of Allaah?
It is not permissible to obtain any of the previous books before the Qur’aan, (be it) the Injeel, the Torah or other than them due to two reasons:
Indeed, everything that was beneficial in them has been clarified by Allaah in the Qur’an [Allaah (The One Free From All Imperfections and Exalted Is He].
Indeed, that which is contained in the Qur’an suffices us from all those books due to the saying of Allaah: ”It is He Who has sent down the Book (the Qur’an) to you (Muhammad) with truth, confirming what came before it.” [3:3] And the saying of Allaah: ‘’And We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this Qur’an) in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it and Mohayminan (trustworthy in highness and a witness) over it (old Scriptures) . So judge between them by what Allah has revealed.” [5:48]. Indeed, that which is found of good in the previous books is present in the Qur’aan.
As for the statement of the questioner that he wants to acquaint himself with the speech of Esaa (alayhis-salaam) the slave and Messenger of Allaah, then indeed that which is beneficial for us from it has already been narrated in the Qur’an, and there is no need to research in other than the Qur’aan. Also, the present Injeel has been distorted and the proof for this is that there are four injeels, and they are all in opposition to one another. It is not a singular injeel. Therefore, they cannot be relied upon.
As for the student of knowledge in possession of knowledge, and he is able to know truth as oppose to falsehood, then it is not impermissible (for him) to be acquainted with (the Injeel, the Torah etc), in order to refute the falsehood and establish the proofs against those who adopt it as their religion.
