‘’Say: “Short is the enjoyment of this world.’’ By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim

Allaah (The Most High) said:

قُلْ مَتَاعُ الدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌ وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا

Say: “Short is the enjoyment of this world. The Hereafter is (far) better for him who fears Allah, and you shall not be dealt with unjustly even equal to the Fatila (a scalish thread in the long slit of a date-stone). [4:77]

This (ayah) contains an (urge) towards abstinence from this worldly life (i.e. the unlawful or even those excess lawful things which a person is not in need of); an urge towards the Afterlife; an encouragement towards performance of good deeds and a rebuke against doing evil deeds. So the statement of Allaah [وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلً – and you shall not be dealt with unjustly even equal to the Fatila (a scalish thread in the long slit of a date-stone)] necessitates urging them to perform good deeds and preventing them from earning evil deeds.
