[The Mubtadi’u (Beginner Student of Knowledge); The Mutawassit (Intermediate) and The Muntahiy (one who has reached a high Level)]: By Shaikh Muhammad Bin Haadi

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

NB: Before presenting the general guidance found in this question and answer, we [i.e. the common people] should be reminded of the fact that neither do we have the ability nor are we allowed to judge the levels of the students by ourselves- regardless their qualifications, efforts in teaching and dawah- rather we return to the scholars to inform us specifically about them. And with Allaah lies all success.

Shaikh Muhammad Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] said:

There is also a question that is asked and it is that some of our sons-the students of knowledge- say: We have heard the Taalibul Ilm Mubtadi’u (the beginner student of knowledge) and the Taalibul Ilm Muntahiy (the student of knowledge who has reached a high level). What is the meaning of these statements?

Answer:

[1] This is well known to the scholars. The Taalibul Ilm Mubtadi’u (the beginner student of knowledge) is that one who has entered into (the arena of) seeking knowledge and does not know the Usool; meaning the Usool of knowledge and is it Usoolul Fiqh. This one is called a Taalibu Ilm Mubtadi’u (a beginner student of knowledge).

[2] The one who enters into (the arena of) seeking knowledge and knows the Usool but he is unable to extrapolate (or derive) evidences; this one is a Taalibu Ilm Mutawassit (the student of knowledge at the intermediary level).

[3] If he knows the ways of extrapolating (or deriving) evidences together with knowledge of the Usool, this one is a Taalibu Ilm Muntahiy (the student of knowledge who has reached a high level).

Therefore, the students of knowledge are three types: The Mubtadi’u (beginner), the Mutawassit (intermediate) and the Muntahiy (the one who has reached a high level).

*The Mubtadi’u is the one who has entered into (the arena of) seeking knowledge but does not know the Usool

*The Mutawassit is the one who has entered into (the arena of) seeking knowledge and knows the Usool, but cannot extrapolate (or derive) evidences.

*The Muntahiy is the one who knows the Usool and how to extrapolate (or derive) evidences.
