Caring Non-Muslim Doctor Advised Me To Make Sure That My Children Clean Their Tongues Regularly; I Said, ‘’This Is From The Authentic Sunnah’’

Narrated Abu Burdah (radiyallaahu-anhu): “I came to the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and saw him carrying a Siwaak in his hand and cleaning his teeth, saying, ‘’U’’ ‘’U‟, as if he was retching while the Siwaak was in his mouth”. [Bukhaari Vol 1. Hadeeth Number 244]

In the narration of Abu Moosaa (radiyallaahu-anhu): ‘’I entered upon the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and the edge of the Siwaak was on his tongue’’. [Saheeh Muslim Number: 592]

Imaam Sadi (rahimahullaah) said: In this (hadeeth) is (proof) that the siwaak can be (used) on the tongue, just as it can be (used) on the gums and the teeth. [Sharh Umdatul Ahkaam’ page 69. 1st edition Dar At-Tawheed 2010/ 1431]

Reminder: An Important Reminder Regarding the Sciences of the Non-Muslims

Imaam Abdul-Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) stated that it is obligatory to categorize the sciences of the non-Muslims in three categories:

[1] A category affirmed by the sound knowledge based proofs [i.e. affirmed by the divine revelation, or does not contradict the divine revelation), so it is accepted.

[2] A category that is established to be false by the knowledge based proofs (i.e. affirmed to be false by the divine revelation or in contradiction to the divine revelation), so it is rejected.

[3] A category about which no knowledge based proof is found indicating whether it can be accepted or rejected. Therefore, one abstains until he comes across proofs from the people of knowledge (i.e. the scholars of Sunnah), indicating whether it can be accepted or rejected.  As for accepting it without examination and investigation but merely blindly following, then this is not permissible due to the numerous mistakes that occur from that…[Abridged and slightly paraphrased: Source: Al-Adillah An-Naqliyyah Wal-Hissiyyah Alaa Jarayaan Ash-Shams Wa Sukoonil Ard’ page: 74]
